Remember, if you are planning to name a puppy or change a name of a newly adopted adult dog, consider the following:

Choosing a Name

  • Choose an unique name unlike other family members or pets.
  • Use the dog's name frequently.
  • Choose a name you feel comfortable shouting aloud.
  • If you are purchasing a puppy from a breeder and have a name picked out, ask the breeder to start calling your dog by his name even before he goes home.

Dogs tend to learn their names, but will only pay attention to the first syllable.

If you ever wondered why we only use one syllable words when training, such as "sit" or "stay" it is for this reason.

If your dog's name is Hershey Kisses, he is more likely to hear Her.  Don't feel obligated to choose a one syllable name, though.  Dogs are smart--they will figure it out!
