Performatrin Ultra Grain-FreePerformatrin Ultra Grain-Free Dog Food Review

We reviewed Performatrin Ultra Grain-Free Dog Food in November, 2014.

We like to evaluate dog foods that small dog owners use frequently and today, Pamela from Ontario Canada writes...

Can you please evaluate my dog's food brand with a score/grade?

Well Of course, Pamela!  Not knowing the breed or age of Pamela’s dog, we are going to rely on the scoring system we use to evaluate other dog foods.

Here is the ingredient list of Performatrin Ultra Grain-Free Dog food from the manufacturer’s website:

According to the manufacturer’s website, the product is formulated for all life stage.  This means that the food could be used for puppies, adults, seniors, pregnant and lactating females.

From their site, it was unclear where the factory was located, but suggests the product is produced in Canada using only ingredients from Canada and the U.S.

As of this writing, it has limited distribution except in Canada and the northeast U.S.

Performatrin Ultra Grain-Free Dog Food Review

In reviewing the dog food products on this site, we begin with the score of 100, then add or subtract depending on the quality of the ingredients.

  • This appears to be a high quality product.  The first five ingredients are Turkey, Turkey Meal, Peas, Salmon Meal and Duck Meal.  Three different meat sources in the first group of ingredients is a definite plus.  There is more protein in meal sources (Turkey meal, Salmon Meal, Duck Meal) than in the first ingredient Turkey, which has a high content of water.
  • Inclusion of prebiotics and probiotics gives the food an additional 3 points
  • A number of fruits are included with adds 3 more points
  • A wide variety of vegetables other than corn provides still another 3 points.
  • The fact that more than one protein sources is included will add another 2 points.
  • This foods loses 1 point because it contains salt but that is the only points lost according to the formula we used.

And, the verdict is...

Performatrin Ultra Grain-Free:  Grade of 110 A+

More Positives:

  • This food’s fiber content comes from vegetable pomace rather than grains which makes it ideal for dogs who may have allergies to grain products.
  • Yeast is added which is a little controversial.  In the “olden” days, we used yeast to repel fleas.  This may have been an old wives tale but it worked.  The addition of yeast products may have some effect on repelling fleas.

The product is described in this You Tube video produced by the company.

According to the video, the company claims that there is no chicken, making it a good product for dogs allergic to chicken.  However, the eighth ingredient is Chicken Fat, so I am curious as to how they can make that claim.
